Aladdin at Orchard Elementary (January 2015)! It was a great show and it was a lot of sewing! Thanks to all who helped.
There were over 80 4th and 5th graders in the play (plus the 2nd and 3rd grade chorus).
The cast was separated into groups and I will have a post about each group and how we did their costumes.
I will start with my son’s costume. He was part of the magic carpet. There were 4 kids cast as magic carpets so we had them dressed as tassels and they held onto the four corners of a “carpet”! They were adorable!
For the actual tunic I used simplicity 4797. I used this pattern over and over again for Aladdin. I bought upholstery fabric and used curtain cord for the belt.
The hats were a little more complicated.
I bought used baseball caps at good will and cut off the bills. They were covered with the same fabric from the tunics. I simply hot glued the fabric to the base of the hat. Then hot glued curtain cording around the bottom. I sewed a tassel to the top. It was great and the kids just loved their costumes. The hats were adjustable and each child had their own color tassel. We would not want to confuse hats!!
On top of their amazing costumes they had an actual carpet they used! My pictures are not great but hopefully you get the idea. I bought heavy weight fabric and put grommets in each corner. An amazing talented mother of another 4th grader painted the fabric. I so wish I had a good picture, because it was beautiful.
Here is a horrible picture of the 4 kids holding the carpet with Aladdin on it. There was a moving cart underneath that made the illusion that Aladdin and Jasmine were flying!
